Yoga classes

As a new Kundalini Yoga teacher, I have given my first public class on July 20th at studio Equilibrium corner of St Laurent and Villeneuve.

This studio is where I learnt Kundalini Yoga, thanks to my teacher, Shabd. It is the main place for Kundalini Yoga in Montreal as it is where all teachers come from (he is the only accredited teacher trainer). But the studio is also offering Kripalu and Vinyasa classes.

The Yoga I practised is focused on prana (which is the same as qi or ki), as well as kundalini energy. This means that you do sets of exercices focused on chakra development. The techniques used are pranayama (breething technique, in particular fire breath), mantras combined with mudras, meditation and of course asanas. They are all classified in units called Kriyas.

This was the yoga I was looking for, before I tried various Hatha styles (hatha yoga is 95% of the yoga market) but always found it was too physical and lost some of the important parts defined in the classics.

I am considering becoming a permanent teacher at Equilibrium, maybe teaching on friday nights. If so my courses will be focused on chakra development sets (there are hundreds of various kriyas, but I will focus on those sets working on chakras).

New location at the end of June

I have found a new location in le Sud Ouest borough.

I was looking for something bigger, more quiet, accessible by car (easy parking), with lots of light, and a good view, near a river and with a dedicated room for healing...

This is exactly what I got. But I had to leave the Plateau for that and relocated in the South near Verdun and Angrignon park, near multiple bike paths and with a view on a soccer playground and the Aqueduc canal.

Because of this relocation, I won't teach from July 1st to July 15th, in order to prepare the healing room energetically (cleansing, raising vibrational level) as well as physically.

I am more than my physical body

Yesterday, I did many things : waking up at 4:00am for Kundalini Yoga Sadhana (morning practise), then again Kundalini Yoga a few hours later followed by a chinese medecine session (that I received) using cups and then I gave a Thai Yoga massage in exchange...

So that made me quite tired at 10:30pm when I fall asleep, having read a few pages of Dolores Cannon latest Book (Convoluted Universe 3). I waked up at 4:30am, quite dry, drank a bit and then went back to bed... And I awoke in a dream...Lucid dreaming as they say. I was walking on a kind of Grand Canyon but with more vegetation. Everything seemed alive, more alive than the classical reality. Indeed I could add it seems more real than the classical reality I live in, more real because alive. Everything seems to vibrate, colors are more beautiful. Beautiful was the thoughts I had and as such I decided not to get too excited about it and decided I needed this landscape in order to relax. I walked a bit, and then with a big smile decided I now needed a beach and it took less than 5s (the transition was very smooth, not instant). I was walking on a sandy beach. I kept my amazement.

Because the environment adapts to your thoughts, you need to be emotionaly stable when you visit there so that it doesn't keep on changing. My first thought when I was walking near the canyon was that I would control my excitment and take it slow so that I could stay longer in this landscape.

Some exciting news...

1. I am learning Thai Yoga Massage and will very soon (february) offer free sessions in order to enhance my knowledge of this very ancient technique. The free sessions will be for my Reiki or Past Life Regression clients.

2. I plan to go to the Monroe Institute in Summer. The Monroe Institute trains people in out of body experiences thanks to the Gateway program.

3. I will update my website in order to present the new techniques I learnt (kundalini yoga, thai yoga massage, hypnosis in general) and have a french and english translation available (before June).

Kundalini Yoga

For the last 7 months, I have been practising Kundalini Yoga and I decided in September to become a Kundalini Yoga teacher because I found many common points between my healer knowledge and what Kundalini Yoga is focusing on. This 200 hours program will finish in June 2009.

While most common yoga comes from the Hatha branch, Kundalini Yoga is a Raj Yoga. The asanas that we use are different from any other yoga and focus on the flexibility of the spine and having a strong navel point. Asanas are combined with mudras and mantras and grouped in kriyas.

This yoga is very spiritual. The aim is to raise the Kundalini energy from the lower back up to the head. We learn about Pranas and how the combination of prana and apana in the navel point can remove all the locks so that the kundalini can reach up.

During the training we will also experiment white tantra as there are common roots between those 2 practises. Indeed the Mahan tantric was the yogi who developp Kundalini Yoga in the west, Yogi Bhajan

It is very interesting to be already experimented with prana (through Reiki and other healing techniques that I actively practise) and then take a yoga teacher training. Most of the things they talk about, I had experiences with... In the past I was quite lost and couldn't find explanations but now thanks to the course I can solve mysteries I had more than 10 years ago.

Having had those experiences with for example, how energy moves inside sushumna, the main nadi to unblock so that Kundalini raise, makes the course more interesting.

I don't know yet whether I will teach Kundalini yoga in the future, but it will for sure help me to explain yogic anatomy and the flow of energy to my healing students.

Out of body experiences

I had my first out of body experience at 7...

Funny story indeed: I went to bed and had to go to the toilets. I fell asleep and went to the toilet during my sleep...I remember how things were bluer and there were tiny bits of light in every objects. I found it very interesting and observe this for a while then went to the toilet. The next morning my bed was wet and I had to explain to my mum how this was not possible because I remembered how I went to the toilet...

I had my second out of body experience at 15...

I found myself becoming a point and shrinking inside of me, went into a tunnel that I felt was inside of me, then lost consciousness and was then outside my body. I saw a village in a forest with 30 people in love with me...That was strange. Everybody was super happy to see me and I felt I missed them but I felt also I didn't remember them. I went into a home and talked to 2 guys and a woman about what I had to do. They used words I didn't know so I had to find them in the dictionnary the day after...One was atavism (never heard this word before), the other was purgatory (which was the answer to the question "where am I ?") (I had no christian background so it didn't mean anything to me)... This experience was intense (I wanted to stay there, I felt at home), and I felt more awake than in normal consciousness.

My third was also at 15 : one of my friend visited me in my bedroom and gave me a lesson on how to fly. He was a very good healer, and experimented out of body explorer (16 years old!). The day after he told me about the experience and what he described was what I had experimented so it was mind blowing...

Recently, during the last year, I started studying it seriously. I think this is the coolest ability to have because there is no limit to what you can explore : you can travel and discover new countries, you can go to Mars, you can meet dead people, or guides... Last year I was seen in Alberta with someone else (a guide) a few minutes after I joke about it with a friend online (I talked about being there, then went to bed), also one of my friend saw some cloud getting outside of me when I was receiving a session (and focusing about getting out)... I probably had multiple others but I have a problem to remember them (that also includes my dreams).

The interesting point is that now when I give sessions and the intensity of my energy is high a lot of people will go in a trance state while they can have out of body experiences. During Summer 2007, my statistics were 1 out of 2 Reiki client... I remember one client being so scared about it, she thought she was dead, and described me details in the appartment that she had seen only while out of body. Generally they will float, will not be able to control their body, see or hear things from other places while in this state...

I also feel more and more what is outside of me ie my aura. It feels like my body is bigger, wider and this extension is vibrating, moving, shaking, reacting to people. I need to transfer my awareness outside my physical body... This development is due to my working out of energy every day. At the beginning it is a slow progression but after the plateau you might see progressively, baby steps after baby steps, that what you think was impossible become a day to day reality.

My subjects of exploration will be other civilizations (outside planet Earth), receiving spiritual teachings, and many more.

2006 was the year of Reiki.
2007 was the year of Past Life Regression.
2008 was my Kundalini Yoga year.
2009 will be the year of my out of body explorations.

McGill Tribune Interview about Reiki

I did an interview last week about what is Reiki. The journalist, Carolyn Yates, asked me many questions that were supposed to be published in this McGill newspaper. Indeed she just published 4 lines (about non interesting matters). She also made many mistakes and globally the article was neutral, going towards the actual consensus about alternative medicine. I learnt after that it was her first article. She also told me she would put a link to my website but of course there was none. I will put her mistakes about her lack of experience. Or maybe I should remember that journalists can't be trusted, they just write what they want to, and that this is the reason why more & more people are going to uncensored blogs instead of reading censored & controlled information sources?

So here is the original interview :

What is the theory behind Reiki?

At the beginning of the 20th century, a Japanese man named Mikao Usui discovered a new healing ability that he named Reiki. In Japanese, Ki is the same as Qi or Chi in Chinese medecine or Prana in Vedic medecine : there is an abundant and universal life force around us that we can tap into. Usually we get Qi by breathing or by taking it from the food we eat but there is also the possibility to tap directly into the source. Reiki is a way of doing it. This extra energy is taken by the Reiki practisionner who acts as a channel and given to the "lower energy" client. Physical problems and emotional issues can be seen as lacks of Qi at specific points in the body (chakras, meridians). If you fix the cause then the problem disappears by itself without the use of external chemistry or the need to open the body.
Out of the many holistic medecine systems that appeared in the last century (most in the New Age era), Reiki has a very good reputation because it has been around for nearly 90 years and shown good results that can be reproduced.

Are there different varieties? What is the difference between them?

Last time I counted there was 200 varieties of Reiki. Reiki is like a base technique and when people adds something to it they want another name for the technique. But out of this jungle of Reiki techniques, what you should look for is what is called Usui Reiki. This is normally the original technique taught by the vast majority of Reiki Masters around the World. There are national associations that sets the teaching standards and the ethic code: in Canada this is the Canadian Reiki Association (CRA), www.reiki.ca. The CRA also ask for people to submit a number of case studies in order to join them.
Apart from Usui Reiki, Karuna Reiki is very popular among Usui Reiki Masters that want to go to the next step. While Usui Reiki energy is gentle, Karuna's energy is strong, sometimes painful at first, but very efficient. I teach both.

From a non-mystical perspective, what is Reiki ?

Is Yoga mystical ? Is Meditation mystical ? Reiki is a technique so by itself it is not mystical. People can make it mystical by adding their own beliefs or fears by lack of understanding. In the world, there are 3 medecine systems : Western, Ayurvedic, Chinese. We live in the West so most of us don't even know about the 2 other systems even if they are older than the Western system. 2 out of 3 systems tell that the human being is using a force named Prana or Qi. Without any Qi in the body, the body is dead. With a boost of Qi, the aura, the energetic body around your body which acts as an interface between you and the rest of the universe, will extend in size, change its colors, shines more. All of the concepts we use in Reiki like chakras, aura layers, and so on, have been used in Ayurvedic medecine for ages. I personally see the physical body as a results of thoughts and emotions. You create your own illnesses. And as such you can also by yourself and with the help of some extra energy, reverse the process. The body is a lot smarter than what our current model teaches us.

What do people expect out of their session/what are reasons people would attend a session?

The minimum expected is a feeling of relaxation, a zen attitude, at the end of the session. This is why many books will describe it as a relaxation technique...But this is just a side effect. Reiki is a healing technique. Depending on the level of experience of your Reiki practitioner, changes can happen on the physical or emotional or even on your life path (we would call it your spiritual side). On the physical, healing will occur, sometimes on very old problems that you thought you would carry all your life. Emotional release means clients may cry or laugh during a session but this process will help them to move forward. The life path changes are the ones I am always amazed at, how life can reorganize itself in a smarter way...
I work on handicapped people, drug addicts, people with sleeping disorders, back problems, people who wants to commit suicide, bipolars, but also on simpler cases like people who just want to experiment how a boost of Qi can influence their life.

What should someone undergoing treatment expect to feel during a session?

Reiki is often perceived as a heat, which moves fast in the body. Others will feel tingling sensations, waves, pulses. During Karuna sessions, I have often seen hands moving by themselves or feet playing soccer on the massage table. The most interesting part being that the client doesn't know it, and doesn't control it. He/She feels as in a medium trance, the body being heavy and the mind very light.
I don't need to touch the body for those sensations to happen. Indeed most of the time I am working above it.

What physical changes would someone experience after a session?

It all depends on what the client brings. Let us talk about my last 2 weeks: I have seen a 1.5 year old problem related to the sciatic nerve (problem to get up), annoying enough that the doctor recommended reeducation, disappear in one Karuna session. And I am working on a mentally handicapped girl that can not walk without support. A lack of oxygen in the brain during birth makes her not able to control her legs since then. During our first session, she felt her feet for the first time in her life. We both cried. She had a back problem (8th vertebra broken after falling down, she was forced to take cortisone the last 2 years)...She couldn't feel it anymore after the session. She felt a wave in her pelvis and was able to walk without support and without shaking directly after the session. Indeed she met her physiotherapist one week after and he cried too. The inclination of her pelvis had changed by 2cm. And it was not a one time event, as I have been working on her during 3 sessions and we can both see how her body is becoming progressively a lot more flexible and the sensibility is coming back to her legs.

How many sessions do clients usually attend?

Some people come for healing something specific and this usually takes from one to 3 sessions. Other becomes addicted to how zen it makes them and will come every months for energy level checkup and maintenance like they go to the hairdresser :)

Have you ever practices with anyone in the medical profession?

I have taught Reiki to many PhDs in science (biology, pharmacy and so on), I have taught also to physiotherapist, osteopaths, naturopaths. As I like to work on difficult cases, because this is where I can learn new things, my clients are generally followed by professionals and I like to get their point of views about the evolution of their case. I would really like to work on cancer patients in cooperation with hospitals or with the Canadian Cancer Society.

If yes, what were the circumstances and results?

A good example is the one I gave previously about my handicapped client. The physiotherapist cried, considered it a miracle, and wondered whether the positive effects would stay or if they would disappear as soon as my client would stop meeting me every 2 weeks. The other physiotherapist asked for my phone number and will probably learn Reiki soon.
I have often seen professionals being perplex about the results, not being able to classify it with their known reference so they have 2 options: it is a miracle, or "hmmm maybe we were wrong when we diagnose this problem initially" (and then they move on without further analysis). I would like to work more with professionals. I contacted hospitals and I am willing to be scientifically analyzed while performing healing because I am a scientific (engineer) and I want science to progress and I really think there is something worth studying here.

What is your opinion of medical professionals who discredit Reiki?

Healers and medical professionals share the same aim: healing and helping other people. We can learn from each others by working together. If you have never experience Reiki and you criticize it based on your fear of change, the best way to open your mind is to try a session. And from there, we can have interesting discussions about new ways of seeing a human body. Don't hesitate to contact me.

Have there been any recent developments in Reiki therapy?

Apart from Karuna Reiki which is around 10 years old, all the actual developments are based on the combination of Reiki basic technique with techniques working in the energy field around people (aura).

Is there anything else you would like to say about Reiki therapy?

As a teacher, my aim is to bring more autonomy to people regarding the management of their health. Learning Reiki, you can also treat yourself. Your skills will develop with practice and discipline, so this is also interesting to get sessions from people with experience.
I dream about cooperation between medical professionals and Reiki practitionners and would like to work directly where I am needed the most, in hospitals.

With over 200 varieties and practitioners all over the globe, Reiki therapy just might be the answer to midterm anxiety. With the premise of the body as an energy system, practitioners channel hefty amounts of Universal Life Force Energy into patients and manipulate energy fields to facilitate healing. While it doesn't replace scientific means of treatment, it can be used as a supplement.

"Many people come to Reiki as a complement to their traditional medical care. Many others find that they want to approach their health care on a more holistic level and Reiki is extremely effective for stress reduction, pain management, numbness and dizziness," explains Karen Wylie, a registered practitioner and teacher with the Canadian Reiki Association. It can also boost the immune system, promote self-awareness, and reduce sleeping disorders and back problems.

Still skeptical? "Reiki is at the very least a stress reduction and relaxation therapy," says Wylie. "It is no more mystical than microwave energy."

Sessions last about an hour. Patients lie on a table, fully clothed, while the practitioner directs energy from the universal life force through their hands to corresponding energy points along their patient's body. Unlike massage, acupuncture, and other therapies based on tissue manipulation, Reiki involves no hands-on movements. Even when the patient gives permission for touch, there's very little physical contact-a benefit for cases where a firmer pressure might cause too much pain, or for those who don't like to be touched.

Many patients report feeling tingling sensations and deep relaxation after a session, but whether this is from lying in the dark for an hour or from energy healing remains to be seen.

While the main purpose of Reiki is healing, members of the CRA can't "claim that Reiki can cure, nor… diagnose any medical problems or prescribe, nor will they ever advise a client to stop taking medications, unless qualified to do so," according to the CRA Code of Ethics, which all practicing members must sign.

Doctors are equally reluctant to give credit to alternative medicine. "The doctors who I have talked to are not yet open to the idea," explains Wylie. "But I have worked with chiropractors often and they recommend my Reiki services… [they] feel that Reiki is a compliment to chiropractic care. They recommend Reiki for those they feel need additional help for emotional stress and pain management."

Other therapists are more hopeful for the future of Reiki in a hospital setting. "I have taught [Reiki] to physiotherapists, osteopaths, naturopaths," says Matt Briand, who both practices and teaches in Montreal. "Healers and medical professionals share the same aim: healing and helping other people. We can learn from each other by working together."

Wylie agrees. "There need to be more areas where traditional and complementary healing modalities work in harmony."

Doctors may be skeptical, but you don't have to be. Sessions are short and usually between 45 and 75 dollars a pop, so for the student with money to burn and wanting a boost of life energy, Reiki might be just what you need.

I am studying Michael Newton's technique to explore what is going on in between lives, he calls it LBL: Life Between Lives, another way to call the Astral world. Michael has written very detailed books sharing his experiences with clients he met for 30 years: Journey of Souls, and Destiny of Souls.
